It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...finally!

Delayed Christmas

We all know the saying, "When it rains, it pours!" The Bernard family definitely experienced this phrase beginning with the week of Christmas! Poor Laney got sick on Monday morning & began with all the symptoms of the infamous GI virus or "stomach bug". We continued on to Monroe that evening not knowing the extent to which this virus would have on our family. We shared Christmas w/ my mom, Ronnie, Alison & Joe. Laney was there in body, but it was obvious she felt extremely terrible. Tuesday night, after a nice, home-cooked, dinner w/ my dad (he was dying to see the baby before Christmas), I too contracted the "stomach bug". Wednesday morning (Christmas Eve), Mic got to experience the grueling effects of this nasty virus. It ran through our family like wild-fire! Little did we know this would be the beginning of what would be a l-o-n-g, tiresome 2 1/2 weeks of virus, virus, and more virus! By the end, it hit 7 people within our immediate family, within 7 days!

Only through God's grace did we make it to Durham on Christmas night. (Looking back on it, we should have stayed at home, but we had all been extremely sick for the past 3 days, in bed, and hadn't eaten a thing! The least we could do was spend Christmas night with family we should have seen days before!). Laney continued to get progressively worse as the days/nights went on! I haven't changed that many diapers, clothes, or sheets on a bed in a very long time. Who knew that begging our child to take just a teaspoon of Pedialite would be so scary, yet so happy at the same time! We have a baby girl who loves to eat, drink, eat more and then drink even more! The 3 pounds she lost definitely showed by the time this virus left us!

We were in the ER at Duke on Saturday, back in the ER on Tuesday & yet this raging, horrific virus was still with us and our Laneybug was the most pitiful thing you've ever seen. It's such a helpless feeling when your child is so sick. If I could have taken this "thing" from her & doubled it a hundred-fold, I would have!

Finally, on Wednesday, January 31st we were back in our pediatrician's office - still not any better than we were 10 days ago. It was then, that they diagnosed her with the GI virus, and upper respiratory virus, conjunctivitis in her right eye, double ear infections and on top of all that, a full body rash! Whewww! We began gruesome antibiotics and she received 2 shots of antibiotics before we left the office that morning. But not without making the nurses have to clean the room and change their clothes from her projectile fluid that so graciously donned everyone, including me!

I took her to my mom's for a few days to give myself & Mic just a few hours of "rest". This Christmas vacation I was on, surely had not been a vacation! I indeed needed a vacation from my vacation!

She began coming around on Saturday, January 3rd. She was interested in eating small amounts of food, drinking about 1/2 of what she normally does, and even giving us a few of her wondrous smiles. We then decided that we'd call Santa to let him know we had a special little girl who was finally able to celebrate her 1st Christmas! She may not have been 100% healthy, but she was definitely 100% better that she was 2 weeks prior! Having a healthy baby is something we will never take for granted & we were grateful that she got to enjoy the magic of Christmas. Even if it was almost 2 weeks late! Merry Christmas Laneybug!

And the winner is...

Mine & Kaitlin's team!!!!!!! Yeah!! The Sunday before Christmas, my girlfriends & I decided to have a "Gingerbread House" making contest! We lounged around, ate dinner together & watched Christmas movies...we had so much fun! Raegan, thanks again for hosting all of us crazy girls! Kaitlin, we're glad you got to watch "Christmas Vacation" for the first time! (Wow, huh??)

I brought Laney for the first part of the night! She got an awesome alligator xylophone from Aunt Raegan & a fabulous UNC cheerleader outfit from Kaitlin (well, Mic thinks it's awesome...and I guess I do too, on her) . Thanks again guys!

Later, the contest began & you could definitely feel the seriousness come over the room. We divided into teams & off we went. We had the same amount of supplies - so we had to be very creative! Kaitlin & I thought out each wall of the house & planned before anything was touched! We included flower boxes, windows, a front door, and even a cul-de-sac w/ a Christmas tree. Raegan & Andrea's roof definitely was superior to ours. I think some one's ADD kicked in...hmm! We were all very careful not to even look into the other team's room where they were so meticulously working.

We finished our masterpieces & took pictures from all sides. We then sent them via picture-message to 3 people who would then judge them & choose their favorite. Again, Raegan & Andrea's roof was by far the best, but mine & Kaitlin's won over all!! We were so excited!! We now have bragging rights for a whole year, because yes, there will be another contest next Christmas!

I enjoyed this night so much & love being able to share memories like these with such wonderful friends! I love you all & cherish the times we've had & I look forward to the many, fun times ahead!

It's a Christmas Party!

The Friday before Christmas, my mom & Ronnie hosted their annual Christmas party at their house. All of our friends and family gathered for dinner & conversation! This is our chance to catch up with everyone to see what's been happening in their lives recently, or over the past year!

Mic & I were lucky to get the chance to attend this year! (We usually always have something the same night!) I was running late, of course, but everyone enjoyed the delicious food, shared recipes and even opened a few gifts! Laney received a VTech key from the Hicks' family that she loves!! Thank you guys!

We had a great time visiting & spending time with cousins and new babies! It was nice to be able to see everyone & catch up before the hustle and bustle of Christmas began! We hope everyone had a blessed Christmas with their families & we can't wait to see you all again soon!!
